Some Process decisions

I have come to an interesting dilemma in my art making.

I have now got on of my frames cut and backed. I have let the drawing determine the shape of the window that I cut out for the frame. This causes the cut out to be more organic, and less "frame" like.
This wouldn't be a problem, except that the idea that they are a frames for conceptual reasons. They make the audience part of the narrative. So should I make the shapes less determined by the drawing and more frame like?
Ill post pictures soon, so you have a better understanding of what I am talking about.

But I wanted to ask, what makes a frame a frame? Post comments, and lets have a conversation!

  1. I feel like a frame can be a design or artistic element that draws attention to something in particular. Or you can call it a "framing device."

This is what I think of, coming from a photo perspective.

A frame in comics is different because it can define a scene, often by size or length to determine how the viewer takes in a scene. The frame can determine a length of time, or it can determine a span of space.

A frame can also be a way to organize, to enclose. When I think of frames on a wall, it is a way to showcase, but also set apart and set within a piece of artwork or a picture. It is also a way to define importance, because you decide that whatever was in that frame is worth the trouble of being framed.

  2. Yea I definately agree with all of those comments, especially the idea of the "Framing device"
When something frames another it emphasizes it. So having imagery around a seperate set of space, or even just a visually accent around another image fuctions as a framing device. So in that case my organic frame shape works.
But the other arguement if your dealing with the concept of frames, you need something that references frames themselves, which might lend itself to more organic forms.
Ill post some pictures tonight or tomarrow so you see what I mean! =D
